2011 NECA ACT EXCELLENCE AWARDS
The NECA ACT Excellence Awards were announced on Friday 26 August 2011 at the Hotel Realm in Barton. The winners will now go into the NECA National Awards which will be announced in Melbourne on 24 November.

Domestic Residence
Winner: Paul Archer Electrical
Project: Private Residence, Reid
The project required all electrical and structured cable works for this large residence in Reid. The highlights included fit-out of a small theaterette, installation of a large number of lights specifically to highlight artwork and memorabilia, and automated PLC controlled backup generator system to multiple underground sub pumps, emergency lighting, and essential services.
Small Contracting Business
Winner: Canberra Connections
Project: Canberra Connections
Canberra Connections is a locally owned company specialising in security, voice and data, electrical and communications systems, for government, retail, and residential sectors. The company uses a variety of of software programs to ensure all aspects of the business operate in an efficient manner. An excellent small business with its sights firmly fixed on future growth.
Industrial - Small Project
Winner: Shepherd Electrical
Project: Fairbairn Low Voltage Metering Works
The project was a major civil works undertaking replacing High Voltage Metering with Individual Low Voltage via the installation of "point of entry cubicles" to various locations throughout the precinct. The project required a two-year planning process with the major challenge of avoiding existing services with little to no documentation of their existence. An excellent project.
Industrial - Large Project
Winner: Martin Donnelly Pty Ltd
Project: Central South Deakin Telephone Exchange Electrical Infrastucture Upgrade
A difficult and complex Telstra project. Some of the work included a survey of all existing power systems reticulation and the progressive replacement of six 1,600amp main distribution boards including 30 automatic transfer switches. Reequired detailed planning to develop switching and power back-feeding procedures to achieve the outcome without any unplanned loss of supply.
Voice/Data
Winner: Shepherd Electrical
Project: Prime Minister's Briefing Room
The fit-out of a state of the art crisis management facility, including concealed networks, to comply with "Sensitive Compartmental Information Facility". Shepherd Electrical installed a 4 tiered segregated fibre communication network and parallel copper network within the 150 mm sub floor. Critical was to maintain the separation of all services. The finished installation has earned Shepherd Electrical a Certificate of Appreciation from the Attorney Generals Department.
Commercial – Small Project
Winner: Electrical Solutions (ACT) Pty Ltd
Project: Canberra Institute of Technology, Sustainable Skills Training Hub
The building was designed to provide a fully functioning teaching facility using a number of passive energy efficiency measures, designed to minimise the requirement for heating and cooling and achieve a 6 star Green Star rating. Electrical Solutions was contracted to design, supply and install the complex Electrical and mechanical and control works. A high quality installation.
Commercial – Medium Project
Winner: Shepherd Electrical
Project: University of Canberra Micro-Simulation Centre
This complex "multi services" project included all electrical mains, sub mains and distribution boards, all cabling and cable management, general power and lighting, emergency services, data and communication systems, MATV and security systems. As a result of the project success Shepherd Electrical has been selected for an additional 12 building upgrade works.

Commercial – Large Project
Winner: O'Donnell Griffin Pty Ltd
Project: Canberra Airport Multi-User Terminal
One of the largest projects undertaken in the ACT. O'Donnell Griffin was contracted for the comprehensive electrical and communication package, which included a large scope of cable reticulation, main switchboards and distribution boards. In addition, the installation of an extensive range of general power, lighting and communications systems throughout the terminal. A very smart Qantas lounge fit-out completes the project. O'Donnell Griffin has been recognised for its excellent achievement on this high profile project.
